Q. Are you the real Cool “Disco” Dan?
A. Yes!
Q. I hear about some other people who call themselves “Disco” Dan, what do you think about that?
A. I don’t mind, just so they know that I am the original.
Q. How did you get your name all those places?
A. I love to walk, sometime I would walk four miles a night, writing my name the whole way.
Q. Are you still living in DC?
A. Yes.
Q. Are you still doing graffiti?
A. Maybe ;)
Q. I see your name with FFC written next to it - what does that mean?
A. FFC is the Furious Five Crew or Furious Fighting Crew. It started in 1986 as a smaller crew of people from Gangster Chronicles, which I also represented. It’s my crew and a lot of people still represent for it.
Q. What is Go-Go?
A. 80's Go-Go is a kind of music from DC that is kind of in between funk, jazz, blues, mellow latin groove, heavy funk and hip-hop. Go-Go bands are all live and play for 2-3 hours with no breaks between the song. And it’s all special to DC! My favorite Go-Go band is Ayre Rayde.
Q. Your graffiti doesn't look like the colorful graffiti paintings I see. What are the roots of your style?
A. In the 1980s, there were crews in every neighborhood of DC, and people would write their names on walls and buses. We all listened to Go-Go instead of hip-hop and Go-Go graffiti was born.
Q. Who inspired you when you were growing up and getting interested in writing graffiti?
A. The guys I looked up to the most was R.E. Randy, who wrote his name with a RE symbol, like Rare Essence, the big Go-Go band, Sir Nose 84, Meatball, Hit Man Jr, Tonya-F & Friends, 88 Finger Ed, Hi.9, Joe Bird, Big Chill, TKO and Man = as = Cujo.
Q. There was a huge Washington Post article about you around fifteen years ago - how did that change your life?
A. It was kind of good and bad at the same time. It exposed me so i had to slow my graffiti down. If the article would have never came out i bet i would have written on the White House by now. But the article gave me the worldwide exposure I always wanted.
Q. What are you up to these days?
A. I’m still doing my thing, drawing.
Q. I've heard there is a movie being made about your life and times?
A. There is. So far it features Chuck Brown, Marion Barry, and members of E.U., Rare Essence, Trouble Funk, and many more people. I am helping to produce it.
Q. When will this movie come out?
A. Late 2008.
Q. Where can I get more info about you?
A. Check out the rest of my web site!
Q. Can I buy your art work?
A. Yes! You can see it and buy some from my site in the near future.
Q. Do you have t-shirts or posters?
A. They are coming! Stay tuned!
